Established in 1988, Home-Start York remains committed to supporting parents with at least one child under the age of five, volunteers visit families in their own homes each week, offering kindness, guidance and practical support. This early intervention, family-centred approach strengthens and empowers families and can prevent issues developing further enabling parents to find their own way forward through their difficulties to achieve lasting change.

Starting a family can be the most wonderful thing you will ever do, but also the most challenging. Home-Start supports parents in the York area to give their children the best possible start in life. Home-Start responds to each family’s individual needs and supports through a home-visiting volunteer visiting them each week for 2-3 hours. Volunteers support parents using motivation, empowerment and kindness– e.g. going to Parent & Toddler group, playing with the children, going to appointments, finding benefits advice, etc. – and with this comes lots of listening and encouragement. walking along side, getting to know each other and having fun together is sometimes enough to turn a bad day into a great week.
