Home-Start York was established in 1988 as a voluntary organisation. Committed to supporting parents with at least one child under the age of six, volunteers visit families in their own homes each week, offering support, friendship and practical help. This family-centred support strengthens and empowers families; Positive intervention in early years can prevent issues developing further and enables parents to find their own way forward through their difficulties to achieve lasting change.
Starting a family can be the most wonderful thing you will ever do, but also the most challenging. Home Start supports families in York area to help parents give their children the best start in life. Home-Start responds to each family’s individual needs and supports those needs through a home-visiting volunteer supporting them each week for 2-3 hours. Volunteers support parents by doing things together – e.g. going to Parent & Toddler group, playing with the children, going to appointments, finding benefits advice, etc. – and with this comes lots of listening and encouragement. Slowly getting to know each other and having a laugh together is sometimes enough to turn a bad day into a great week.
