Could you be there for a family that needs you?

Parenting can be wonderful — and it can be really hard. Many families in York go through difficult times, and sometimes what makes the biggest difference is simply having someone to turn to.

Home-Start York recruits volunteers throughout the year, with training courses usually held in spring and autumn. As a volunteer, you'd visit a family in their home for a few hours each week — offering a friendly face, a listening ear, and a little practical support during what can feel like an overwhelming time.

The families we support may be dealing with:

• Loneliness or isolation

• The demands of twins, triplets or several young children

• Illness, bereavement, disability or special needs

• Being a lone or first-time parent

• Postnatal illness or depression

• Preparing their child for nursery or school

• Antenatal support in the run-up to a new baby

Who volunteers with Home-Start York?

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and all ages. Many have their own experience of raising children. Others want to give a few hours a week to make a real difference, or to gain experience in family support. What they all share is warmth, empathy and a non-judgemental approach.

No professional qualifications are needed — just compassion, common sense, and a good sense of humour.

What does the preparation course involve?

All volunteers complete an e-learning course followed by two days of in-person group training. It's informative and welcoming, with a focus on real life experience — how to listen well, hold space for others, and offer support without judgement. There's plenty of encouragement, laughter and mutual support along the way.

We also offer optional further training in School Readiness and Perinatal Mental Health Support.
